Care and Cleaning
Our knitwear is designed to be resilient, just like the sheep from which it comes.
While machine washing is an option, we recommend hand or spot washing to maintain the integrity of the fabric. Aggressive washing or high temperatures can lead to shrinking and warping.
How to clean the felt design:
Mistake happen! If a splash of mud or tomato sauce lands directly on the felt design, don't panic.
- 'Slice' it off: Using something flat and thin such as a spoon to swipe underneath and lift off the dirt before it sinks into the wool.
- Blot Immediately: If the stain persists, use a damp cloth to gently blot the stained area. Do not wipe or tug on the wool fibres as this may disrupt the design.
- Apply soap: Rub a small amount of soap and water between you hands, then gently press it onto the stain. DO NOT RUB THE DESIGN. Instead gently pat the soap into the wool.
- Rinse: Remove the soap with tepid or cold water.
- Squeeze: Press the area between your hands to remove excess water.
- Air Dry: Reshape and lay flat in a warm place to dry.
Don't forget - if a design is damaged or stained beyond cleaning, I offer free touch ups for existing designs. Simply pay for postage to freshen up your knitwear.
How to wash felted knitwear:
Airing out
Laundry day doesn't come as often as you'd think. Sheep have evolved coats that naturally resist dirt and water.
With wools resilient qualities, sometimes simply airing your garment on a washing line is enough to bring back that clean feeling.
Hand/Spot Cleaning
We recommend this for minor stains. Follow these steps:
- Blot Immediately: Use a damp cloth to wipe the stained area.
- Apply Soap: Add a small amount of water and gentle soap or laundry detergent. Rub gently back to front. DO NOT RUB THE DESIGN.
- Rinse: Remove the soap with clean water.
- Squeeze: Press the area between your hands to remove excess water without wrinkling.
- Air Dry: Lay flat to dry.
Machine Washing
If you choose to machine wash, please take the following precautions:
- Prepare the Garment: Turn it inside out and place it in a laundry bag for extra protection.
- Machine Settings: Use a wool or delicate cycle with a maximum temperature of 30°C.
- Reshape: After washing, reshape the garment while damp and dry it flat.
- Ironing: Thinner garments can be ironed inside out on a low steam setting.
- Avoid Certain Products: Do not use fabric softeners, bleach, or tumble dryers.
Storage
For optimal storage:
- Fold your garment and place it in a dark, dry drawer or box.
- Avoid Creasing: Don’t fold through the needle-felted design to keep it wrinkle-free.
- Moth Deterrents: Consider using citronella or lavender pouches as natural moth repellents.
Natural Wear and Tear
As your garment ages, it may develop fuzz or pilling—that’s perfectly normal! Simply trim any fuzz with scissors or use a lint trimmer. Electric lint trimmers are recommended as they minimize tugging on the fibres.
With the right care, your upcycled garment can be enjoyed for years to come.
